In 1 Samuel 3, Eli instructs Samuel to respond to God, “Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.” A spiritual director guides you in slowing down, sitting, and listening to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

In our fast-paced world many find it challenging to set aside time to sit still and actually listen to God. Just Be Sessions are a monthly space where I guide you in listening, prayer and reflection. You don’t need to come with the right words or an agenda—just a willing heart. Together, we make space for God to speak into your life.

My name is Katie Gerber. I love listening to people’s stories from all walks of life! I have been in ministry for over 25 years, starting as a children’s pastor for 15 years and then a missionary in Nairobi, Kenya for the last 10 years. I discovered spiritual direction during a season when I felt spiritually dry and unsure I even wanted to return to the mission field. Over the past few years I have fallen in love with the practice of spiritual direction, first for my own life and now for others as well!

I’m married to Patrick and we have a grown daughter, Hannah. I am an American from the Midwest (Go Buckeyes), but have lived on the East Coast and now live in Nairobi. Learn more about our family’s mission work in Kenya at GerbersGo.com.

My Safari into Spiritual Direction

“Safari” is the Swahili word for going on a journey. At the beginning of our last furlough in the U.S. I was feeling a bit lost. My relationship with the Lord was in a dry desert season and if you caught me in a vulnerable moment I might have told you, “I’m not getting back on that plane [to Kenya] in January.” I began to pray for God to open a new door for me.

That is when I heard about spiritual direction and quickly scheduled my first session. Like most people I had no idea what to expect, I just knew I was supposed to do it. What has transpired in those sessions has been a beautiful transformative gift from the Lord. It has been a space of gentle correction and a constant molding into His image.

I know without a shadow of a doubt that my God wants to spend time with me and have a relationship with me even in those times where He feels distant. And I know that sometimes you need a little direction to help hear His voice through all the noise.

I did get on that plane and returned to ministry in Kenya. When I arrived, my ministry leadership asked me to become a spiritual director myself. So I am excited to build on my ministry career and have completed the first half of a Spiritual Direction Certification program through Leadership Transformations.

While completing my certification I have loved inviting people into these sacred spaces to Just Be with their heavenly Father. I love that I get to put these skills into practice both in my ministry in Kenya, but also through Just Be Sessions where I can help anyone anywhere on their spiritual safari!
